What’s the Natural Method of Pest Control? Phoenix Scottsdale Exterminators

What’s the natural method of pest control for Phoenix and Scottsdale Exterminators?

In Phoenix and Scottsdale Exterminators like us are always asked about natural methods for keeping bugs out of homes. It’s important to understand that the word “Natural” means different things to different people. I will break down for you what natural Exterminating is to us at NaturZone Pest Control.

Natural Methods

We like to talk about our natural, or more responsible methods of controlling pests. Folks like to ask what products we use. The answer is a very wide assortment of products from pure botanical extracts, to some safe synthetic products. The products aren’t as important as the methods though.

We use pesticides, botanical or not, in areas where you don’t come in contact with them. Spraying the foundation of your home, flushing cracks and crevices, and block fences as well as other areas that are away from where you live.

Baits are used to control ants, crickets, and roaches around your yard. Most of these baits have naturally derived ingredients. The benefit to using baits around the property this way is that it greatly reduces the population of bugs to be kept out of the home. This reduced population also starves other critters like spiders and scorpions of their needed food source.

Spray-N-Pray

A very large portion of Phoenix and Scottsdale Exterminators use truck mounted power sprayers to hose down very large areas of properties. Some go as far as spraying entire properties with pesticides! This method is often called “Spray-N-Pray” because of its very unreliable results. There’s good news and bad news about this method. The good news is they have to water down their mix to do this. The bad news is they have to water down their mix to do this. At any rate this method usually leaves the majority of the product out in the sun to disintegrate from sun and rain very quickly.

Spray-N-Pray is used by many companies because it is a very simple method to teach and requires little training, you just walk around spraying everything. But it lacks effectiveness because it doesn’t get the product where the bugs live. it also leaves chemicals spread all over your property for pets and people to walk through.

The Bottom Line

When it comes down to it, many other Phoenix and Scottsdale Exterminators are acting as your “Spray Guy.” They come out and look really cool hosing down your property with pesticides, but often don’t accomplish much. Good Exterminators will take the time to assess the situation and come up with a game plan for future services. If you have a unique issue, we will take the time to do some detective work and come up with the best, most responsible way to move forward.

Giant Roaches Inside Your Home? Phoenix / Scottsdale Exterminators

Folks often call Phoenix and Scottsdale exterminators to treat large American or “Sewer” Cockroach issues coming from outside, but bug sleuths will sometimes find an entire colony sustaining itself inside the home!

A common issue for Phoenix and Scottsdale Exterminators  is large roaches, usually American roaches, getting into homes from outside. Many folks believe that these roaches come up through their drains, because of the common nickname for them, “Sewer” Roaches. While this is a possibility, It’s much more likely that they are coming in from outside the house. Even less likely is the possibility that they are living in and sustaining themselves inside your home. But it ca happen. Let’s look at each possibility briefly.

“Sewer” Roaches are assumed to come from the sewer. This is possible but not actually the norm. Roaches are actually good swimmers, so the possibility does exist that they can swim through the drains, but this simply isn’t the case most of the time.

Phoenix and Scottsdale Exterminators often find roaches outside in cool, moist, dark, and protected spaces. Some of these include the hollows of trees, water boxes, or under the tangled roots of untrimmed shrubs. I find in my work that most of the time folks are seeing roaches inside the house, they are usually coming from outside, in one of these types of areas.

Of course the least likely is bound to happen at some point, and after more than ten years in this industry it recently happened in a home I was treating. The customer told me that he was having a lot of large sewer roaches in his den. After checking outside and finding no hiding places for them, I decided to check the room where he was seeing them, just in case. They were in an antique curio cabinet in the corner of the room. Hundreds of them, thriving by leaving the cabinet at night and eating his dog’s food and water just a few feet away.

Hundreds of huge American Roaches were living inside this cabinet!

It should be pointed out that this was in a well kept, clean home. A lot of folks think that having roaches means that you’re dirty or unsanitary. While it’s true that the roaches themselves are less than sanitary, it says nothing about you, or how you keep your home to be a victim of their infestation.

When you see roaches, call some Phoenix or Scottsdale exterminators and nip that problem in the bud sooner rather than later.

If you’re having a problem with Sewer Roaches…or any other pest…or you simply have a question…call NaturZone Pest Control at 602-476-1088 and ask for me, Jeffrey.  I’ll be happy to speak with you anytime.

What Are the Biggest Termite Risk Factors? Phoenix / Scottsdale Termites

In Phoenix and Scottsdale Termites are a huge problem for homeowners! What can you do to reduce your termite risk factors?

Phoenix and Scottsdale termites are a never ending problem for homeowners. We are often asked what you can do to reduce your risk factors for getting termites. here is a couple ideas to keep those pesky home eaters away.

Moisture is a  bug termite risk factor. having moisture right next to your home gives the colony easy access to everything they need. They get their moisture from the ground, where they live, and they get their food from the wood in your home. Having moisture from drips, leaks, or plants too close to the foundation of your house is very enticing for termites. Try to keep plants, especially the moisture from plants at least 2-3 feet away from the foundation of your home.

Phoenix termites, Scottsdale termites, Termite risk

Shrubs against the foundation of your house can provide moisture for a termite colony.

Early detection is a big advantage if you do get an infestation. Our customers get a free check up with every service. But when the foundation is blocked by debris, shrubs, weeds, or items stacked against the house, this can not only make the treatment less effective or difficult to complete, but can prevent your technician from seeing signs of Scottsdale termites. This is another reason why it’s important to keep shrubs and other plants away from the foundation of your home.

If you’re having a problem with termites or think you may…or you simply have a question about pest control…call NaturZone Pest Control at 602-476-1088 and ask for me, Jeffrey.  I’ll be happy to speak with you anytime.

Ant and Termite Treatment- Phoenix / Scottsdale Termites

In Phoenix and Scottsdale Termites and ants are an ongoing concern for homeowners!

Some of the same methods can control Phoenix and Scottsdale Termites and Ants. Sometimes a Termite treatment can have the added benefit of controlling ants inside and outside the home as well. In this featured video I’ll show you how a termite treatment can not only protect a home from ants, but may even run the entire colony out of town for good!

[embedyt] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UoqAfGDE3lM[/embedyt]

When we do a treatment for Phoenix and Scottsdale Termites we inject and saturate the ground around the foundation of the home with a termiticide that insects can’t tell is bad for them. The advantage to this is that the termites, and ants when they are in the treated area, go about their usual business not knowing that anything is wrong. They get the termiticide on them, and also transfer it to others in the colony that may not have come in contact with it initially.

In the video you see the ants “heading for the hills” so to speak, with their young. This is not a response from the chemical, but rather it is a flood response that is usually triggered during heavy rain. They are heading for higher ground to form a new colony there. Little do they realize that they will all soon be dead.

Thousands of ants pour out of their nest to avoid the flooding termite treatment.

Termite Treatment Overview – Phoenix Termites & Scottsdale Termites

Phoenix termites and Scottsdale termites are some of the most prolific wood destroying insects in the country!

Phoenix termites and Scottsdale termites require a very specific type of treatment. In this article we will look at a basic overview of what that treatment looks like. Keep in mind that every subterranean termite treatment is different and that some require more or alternate types of treatment than what is discussed here. Your Phoenix termite or Scottsdale termite specialist will know what treatments you need and  let you know.

Before we get into the treatment it’s important to know a few basics about Subterranean Termites. As their name implies, these nasty little home eating critters live underground. They get all the moisture they need from the dirt around your home. But they get their nourishment from the wood in your home. So they have to travel from the ground to your home and back to the ground approximately every 24 hours. This is important to know because a lot of folks like to know why the ground around the home needs to be treated when the termites are eating the house itself.

When we treat for Phoenix termites or Scottsdale Termites we have to saturate the ground around the entire foundation of the house. for a lot of the perimeter of the home trenches are dug against the foundation in order to pour the proper amount of liquid treatment into the ground and saturate it thoroughly. Then the dirt dug up from the trench is saturated and replaced. Finally the rocks are put back over the the trenched area to make it look good as new.

When the termites return to the earth around the home they return to treated dirt. They cannot tell that the dirt is treated because the product is non-repellent. So the damaging little rascals go about their business in the ground, rubbing against others and transferring the product from one to the next. Eventually the entire colony is destroyed in this way. This is, of course, a slow process but a very effective one at eliminating the entire problem and preventing new ones for years to come.

But what about the earth underneath a patio? Actually any place where a concrete pour meets the main slab of your home, like most patios, porches, and inside many garages, needs to be treated too. To do this we usually need to drill holes in the concrete to get to the earth underneath. Then product is injected into those holes and then the holes are patched. a lot of folks ask if its really necessary to drill holes in the garage or patio when the concrete slabs are so close together. In the following video valley termite expert Jeromy West shows how small a space Scottsdale termites and Phoenix termites can use to get from the ground to the wood in the house.

[embedyt] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2vkl1QFczUk[/embedyt]

Termites use “mud” tubes to get from the safety of the earth to the wood that they need to eat. These tubes aren’t actually made of mud as the name may imply, but rather they are made of celulose from They do this because they don’t do well in the open air. as you could see in the video these tubes can squeeze through some very small spaces, making the thoroughness of a treatment paramount.

Termite tubes can go through some very tight spaces.

Scorpion Hunting is Fun! Phoenix / Scottsdale Scorpion Control

Phoenix and Scottsdale Scorpion Control Pros know that regular nighttime scorpion hunts are both effective and fun!

Phoenix Scorpion Control and Scottsdale Scorpion Control is one of the more difficult, involved, and rewarding tasks for a Pest Control Pro to take on. Scorpion hiding places are sometimes hard to isolate, and the scorpions themselves are very tough to kill, and almost impossible to prevent.  So what can a homeowner do to help their pest pro and make treatments more effective? Nighttime black-light hunts are a fun way to kill some time and a lot of those nasties, helping to keep the population down on your property and reducing the amount of scorpions that have the potential to get into your home.

All scorpions fluoresce or “glow” under ultraviolet light. On nights with a lot of moonlight this causes them to stay hidden most of the time. But we can get ultraviolet flashlights, or black-lights, and make them glow ourselves.

Why do they fluoresce? Well there’s part of an answer to that question. Scorpions have a layer in their exoskeleton called the cuticle. This cuticle protects them from all sorts of things, including making them less susceptible to pesticides. It also has a substance in it called Hyaline. Hyaline is what causes the cuticle to fluoresce in ultraviolet light, but scientists still aren’t sure where the hyaline comes from. But they know that its a very durable substance lasting for millions of years because they have found scorpion fossils that fluoresce in the same way!

So here’s the fun part! Grabbing an ultraviolet flashlight and going outside to check your property for scorpions at night can do a few beneficial things for you. First it can help you locate and identify the heaviest infested ares on you property so that you can share this information with your Scottsdale Scorpion Control technician and help make your treatments much more effective!

The other benefit to nighttime hunts is to help reduce the population on your property, making breeding more difficult for them and generally making your home less likely to be invaded by these creepy, nasty gangsters of the arthropod world.

Shining your light along Block fences, cracks and crevices, large rock formations, around trees and around the foundation of your home are all great ways of finding scorpions. taking a quick knockdown aerosol or other means of dispatching them is the last step. When you locate a scorpion, first kill it immediately, then take note of the exact location for your records and to help your Scottsdale Scorpion control pro to know the heaviest problem areas.

Many of my customers have a good time doing this and have seen results much faster than relying on pesticide treatments alone. That’s what the natural approach to pest control is all about, Making use of every tool available to use so that we do not have to count on just the pesticides that we use.

If you’ve got a problem with scorpions…or any pest…or you simply have a question…call NaturZone Pest Control at 602-476-1088 and ask for me, Jeffrey.  I’ll be happy to speak with you anytime.

Till then, thanks for reading!

Are Your Neighbors Breeding Bugs?! Phoenix / Scottsdale Pest Control

In Phoenix and Scottsdale pest control experts have to take every factor into consideration when solving Bug problems. Sometimes the Neighbors are a part of the problem though.

Phoenix pest control and Scottsdale pest control companies are always asked about the likelihood that a neighbor is the cause of or a contributor to a pest problem like scorpions, spiders, ants, and cockroaches. Often the answer is no. But sometimes it’s glaringly obvious that something the neighbors are doing, or not doing is a big part of the problem.

When I’m asked about this possibility the answer often falls into one of three categories:

  • The neighbors are not part of the problem.
  • The neighbors are definitely contributing to the issue.
  • It is a widespread issue that everyone needs to address.

Let’s look at these three individually.

The neighbors are NOT part of the problem.

This is the definitely the most common answer that I give to this question. More often than not bug problems can be solved and treated on your property without sorting about what, if any, contributions have been made by the neighbors.

Usually treating your yard with a bait, and structures like the house and block fence, with a spray or other targeted treatment, will be enough to keep bugs out of your home.

So often I have had folks sure that the neighbors were the cause of the roaches or the scorpions only to realize a week or two after my initial service, that the issue has stopped with a treatment on their property. It’s really that simple most of the time and the homeland bad feelings are almost always unfounded.

The neighbors are definitely contributing to the issue.

[embedyt] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EBYOrjiGh1E[/embedyt]

When I walk into a yard, like the one in the video above, and see a well trimmed yard with a jungle growing on the other side of the fence, I know right away that there are factors at play in the neighbors yard.

Don’t get me wrong, folks may have a beautiful yard that is well kept, but if you have vines and thick shrubs growing up against the fence, that will provide immense structure for the bug de jure to live and thrive, free of pesticides, and in relative luxury. They just love the cool, moist little nooks and crevices all over inside that fence when it’s completely protected from Phoenix and Scottsdale pest control techs.

Of course, this is a huge problem when it comes to scorpions. Scorpions thrive inside block fences and the best way to control them is to treat those fence columns directly.

But please don’t have any ill will toward your neighbors in these situations. They are likely completely ignorant of the their part in the issue. After all, you’re the weirdo reading pest control blogs!

They often just need to be educated about the problem. Sometimes recommending a Phoenix pest control or Scottsdale pest control guy to them is all they need. It’s also a very good idea to both get treatment at the same time as this often can provide a huge it to the pest population so big that they may never recover.

It’s a widespread issue that everyone needs to address.

Sometimes a pest issue can affect an entire neighborhood so much that all or most of the properties need to be treated by a professional in order to get the problem under control.

A few years ago I went into a small neighborhood with small homes all built very close together. I had quite a few customers in there, and noticed that many of the homes that I was not treating had black widow webs around the foundation. After taking a look around the neighborhood it was clear that it was an issue for almost everyone.

I talked to some of the neighbors of my customers and they didn’t know why they kept coming back. I explained that if I was able to treat many of them all at the same time that the black widow population would become much more manageable and probably cease to be an issue. I ended up servicing quite a few homes there and have not seen black widows in that neighborhood since.

In all three of the situations above a thorough treatment, done right, can help control the issues for you!

If you’re having a problem with any of these pests…or you simply have a question about pest control…call NaturZone Pest Control at 602-476-1088 and ask for me, Jeffrey.  I’ll be happy to speak with you anytime.
