Are Your Neighbors Breeding Bugs?! Phoenix / Scottsdale Pest Control

In Phoenix and Scottsdale pest control experts have to take every factor into consideration when solving Bug problems. Sometimes the Neighbors are a part of the problem though.

Phoenix pest control and Scottsdale pest control companies are always asked about the likelihood that a neighbor is the cause of or a contributor to a pest problem like scorpions, spiders, ants, and cockroaches. Often the answer is no. But sometimes it’s glaringly obvious that something the neighbors are doing, or not doing is a big part of the problem.

When I’m asked about this possibility the answer often falls into one of three categories:

 • The neighbors are not part of the problem.
 • The neighbors are definitely contributing to the issue.
 • It is a widespread issue that everyone needs to address.

Let’s look at these three individually.

The neighbors are NOT part of the problem.

This is the definitely the most common answer that I give to this question. More often than not bug problems can be solved and treated on your property without sorting about what, if any, contributions have been made by the neighbors.

Usually treating your yard with a bait, and structures like the house and block fence, with a spray or other targeted treatment, will be enough to keep bugs out of your home.

So often I have had folks sure that the neighbors were the cause of the roaches or the scorpions only to realize a week or two after my initial service, that the issue has stopped with a treatment on their property. It’s really that simple most of the time and the homeland bad feelings are almost always unfounded.

The neighbors are definitely contributing to the issue.

When I walk into a yard, like the one in the video above, and see a well trimmed yard with a jungle growing on the other side of the fence, I know right away that there are factors at play in the neighbors yard.

Don’t get me wrong, folks may have a beautiful yard that is well kept, but if you have vines and thick shrubs growing up against the fence, that will provide immense structure for the bug de jure to live and thrive, free of pesticides, and in relative luxury. They just love the cool, moist little nooks and crevices all over inside that fence when it’s completely protected from Phoenix and Scottsdale pest control techs.

Of course, this is a huge problem when it comes to scorpions. Scorpions thrive inside block fences and the best way to control them is to treat those fence columns directly.

But please don’t have any ill will toward your neighbors in these situations. They are likely completely ignorant of the their part in the issue. After all, you’re the weirdo reading pest control blogs!

They often just need to be educated about the problem. Sometimes recommending a Phoenix pest control or Scottsdale pest control guy to them is all they need. It’s also a very good idea to both get treatment at the same time as this often can provide a huge it to the pest population so big that they may never recover.

It’s a widespread issue that everyone needs to address.

Sometimes a pest issue can affect an entire neighborhood so much that all or most of the properties need to be treated by a professional in order to get the problem under control.

A few years ago I went into a small neighborhood with small homes all built very close together. I had quite a few customers in there, and noticed that many of the homes that I was not treating had black widow webs around the foundation. After taking a look around the neighborhood it was clear that it was an issue for almost everyone.

I talked to some of the neighbors of my customers and they didn’t know why they kept coming back. I explained that if I was able to treat many of them all at the same time that the black widow population would become much more manageable and probably cease to be an issue. I ended up servicing quite a few homes there and have not seen black widows in that neighborhood since.

In all three of the situations above a thorough treatment, done right, can help control the issues for you!

Scorpions will be BAD this year! Phoenix / Scottsdale Scorpion Control

With the relatively warm winter and spring we just had, Phoenix and Scottsdale Scorpion Control is shaping up to be a wild ride this year!

In Phoenix and Scottsdale scorpion control is always serious business, but in years after a warm winter, and almost no spring to mention, scorpion activity can ramp up very quickly!

As a general rule I like to use new accounts as a way to gauge scorpion activity. During this last winter, I had new accounts from scorpion infestations every month of winter and into spring. This means that the scorpions didn’t even take their semi-customary winter break from terrorizing valley residents. And, more importantly, it means that they have had an almost uninterrupted, long breeding season.

Just today I did a first service for some folks who have been seeing a lot of baby scorpions. This means that the scorpion season has officially started, even though it never really ended this time.

What to Watch For

Scottsdale scorpion control, Phoenix scorpion control, Scottsdale pest control, Phoenix pest control.
These. Watch For these.

A lot of folks ask me what to watch for in order to to determine when they should start a Phoenix and Scottsdale scorpion control program. We’ll get to when in a minute.

Scorpions, just like their family members in the wild, enjoy being in areas that are the least like the burning desert as they can find. This means they’re looking for shade, moisture, bugs to eat, and protection from predators (like exterminators). If you have areas around your home that offer shade for a lot if the day, retain moisture, and offer protection to scorpions and their table fare, you need to check these areas, or have a professional check them.

If you see crickets, and roaches and other bugs around your home, you essentially have a free buffet for scorpions. I don’t know about you, but if I had a free buffet in my area, I’d be there every day!

When is the Best Time to Start?

Folks that aren’t already on a regular pest control scheduled service often ask when the best time is to start Phoenix and Scottsdale scorpion control services. Well the answer is about two months ago. Yeah, I know. You don’t have a Delorian OR a flux capacitor so starting two months ago is not an option for you.

Well I have good news for you, the second best time to start is RIGHT NOW! It’s so cliche but it’s true. If you live in or near an area with scorpions you need to start your Phoenix and Scottsdale scorpion control program BEFORE you start seeing scorpions. Prevention is the key to living much more happily this summer.

Scorpion problems that are left to grow into the dog days of summer can take more time to get under control. The higher the numbers of scorpions get, the higher chance they have of getting inside your home!

It’s important to recognize that scorpions are one of the toughest pests to kill. So this means that we need to use absolutely everything in our toolbox that can help to control them. We recommend starting with a complete crack and crevice flush out as well as a foundation flush. We also recommend adding a full dusting the first time to really attack the scorpions where they live!

How Often Should I Have Service?

For a light scorpion infestation I recommend a Bi-monthly service. Having service every two months, after a very thorough initial service, can take care of most light to moderate infestations.

Heavy infestations should be treated every month in order to keep the scorpion population low and stay on top of the problem. Folks who live in more natural desert areas like up against a mountain or preserve usually need monthly service to keep things under control. When you live that close to their natural habitat, you have to stay diligent.

4 Hiding Spots for Crickets – Phoenix Pest Control Scottsdale Pest Control

Hiding spots for crickets are easy for Phoenix pest control and Scottsdale Pest Control pros to find, so where do you look?

Most Phoenix Pest Control and Scottsdale Pest Control exterminators know right where to find your crickets and exterminate them. So how do YOU find them? In  this article I’ll give you my favorite 5 spots to find and kill crickets outside the home so that they don’t ever get inside the home and bother you, depriving you of sleep and peace.

Why eliminate crickets?

Other than the obvious reason, that their chirping inside your home can drive the sanity from the most patient person, there are also another reason to get rid of these annoying little guys. They provide a major food source for more menacing pests like Black Widow spiders and Scorpions! In fact, in most scorpion control programs, Phoenix pest control and Scottsdale pest control exterminators make their first step eliminating the food sources of the scorpions of which crickets are usually the most plentiful. Kill the crickets and many times the scorpions will have no reason to be on your property.

What’s more, many times while treating for crickets I’ll end up killing scorpions too. So let’s look at five spots where your likely to find crickets on your property.

 • The Foundation of Your Home
 • Cracks and Crevices
 • Block Fence Voids
 • Water Boxes
 • Underneath Ground Covering Plants

The Foundation of Your Home

Foundation’s should be treated up to the weep screed (that lip that sticks out) to eliminate this as a place for crickets to live and enter your home.
 1. Just a few inches up from the ground on your foundation is a metal lip called a “Weep Screed” that lets your walls breath. It also provides an excellent hiding spot for crickets and others to hide, but also to get into your home. These weep screeds have a gap behind them that is sometimes big enough to get fingers behind but usually just a couple millimeters wide. It also has holes every 2-3 feet called “weep holes’.

I always use a liquid pesticide and spray the entire foundation making sure to angle my spray upwards toward the weep screed and weep holes in order to get as much as possible into the cricket’s living quarters.

Cracks and Crevices

There are lots of different types of cracks and crevices around most properties. The major one is the crevice between your house slab and your patio slab oranywhere else where two slabs of concrete meet each other. This spotprovides protection from us humans as well as from the sun. It is also usually much cooler down there.

I usually flush these crevices with a liquid but sometimes if there is diffrent structure to it I may use an aroesol or a dust treatment.

Block Fence Voids

The empty spaces inside block fences are always a target for any good Phoenix pest control or Scottsdale pest control exterminator. They provide a cool place protected from the sun and humansand there is LOTS of space in there.

Pest Control Expert Bill Stewart says: “I like to dust block fence voids once or twice a year. We always watch for pest activity to change throughout the year and then decide the best time for the treatment at each property.”

In addition to that dust treatment I regularly flush the cracks and crevices of block fences while doing rutine services.

Water Boxes

Those plastic boxes that have your irrigation equipment inside them are often hot spots for cricket activity, and their predators. Not surprisingly, it’s rather moist and cool in them which is like an oasis for critters in the hot summers…and springs…and falls that we have here in the Phoenix and Scottsdale area. Usually I’ll hit these with  a quick hit of arosole which clears them out and kills them quick.

Underneath Ground Covering Plants

Some of the biggest areas in need of cricket treatment are under those pretty ground cover plants in your yard. These plants provide a cool, moist and protected area for all manner of critter and creepy crawly to live, love and laugh in. Try to keep these to a minimum suare footage as well as keeping the dead and decaying leaves and twigs cleared out fom under them. I often treat around or underneath these when possiblebut sometimes they are so big that adaquate cricket treatment is very dificult.

Scorpion Control Scottsdale: Block Fences – NaturZone Pest Control

In Scottsdale, Az., scorpion control is a never-ending issue with pest control companies. Here at NaturZone Pest Control, we get calls daily from frantic homeowners who have found scorpions in or around their homes.

What can I do other than hire a pest control company to get rid of scorpions?

In this series I’ll give you several pointers on what you, the homeowner, can do, to keep scorpions out of and away from your home.

Block Fence Columns

If Scorpions were 1930’s gangsters then block fence columns would be the dark back allies and speakeasies of Chicago. Fence columns have everything the Al Capone of scorpions, the Arizona Bark Scorpion, could want in a seedy lair.

 • Fence columns are shaded and covered.
 • They are cool and can retain moisture.
 • They provide hiding spaces which are nearly impenetrable to humans.
 • They provide plenty of food resources in the form of other pests.

A good pest control tech knows this and we do our best to treat them with varying types of treatments. The problem is that many have obstacles.

Bushy plants should be kept far enough away from the fence, especially the columns, that ideally you can walk behind them, but at least far enough away that the cracks on each side of the columns can be treated.

Sheds or other structures usually pose a problem as well. Not only are they, many times, in the way of the fence columns, but then there’s a barrier to treating under or around the sheds themselves, another hot spot.

Vines on fences. Oh boy! Vines are beautiful, and they sometimes really make the yard, but they also make it near impossible to treat the fence, and they compound the problem by making the hiding spot more shaded, cooler, and even more protected.

If you want to see the scorpion gangsters going in and out of their speakeasy at night, like business is really booming, just go to a property with vines growing all over the fence line.

If you aren’t the one with the green thumb, but your neighbor is the one trying to single handedly replenish the world’s oxygen supply with their landscaping, then by all means, keep your side trimmed to a reasonable level, so as to facilitate the treatment of of the columns, while still having a little bit of pretty hanging over into your yard.

Scorpion expert Bill Stewart says: “Scorpions are naturally attracted to moisture so I like to recommend that folks keep their property as natural as possible but not try to make it a copy of their yard back in Minnesota or Washington state.”

Just keep this in mind, this is the desert, a rather inhospitable place, but if your yard is an oasis in that desert, everybody’s coming to visit. And that may include Capone and his thugs.

Next time we’re going to talk about trees and the role they play.
