Stealth Bed Bugs! Phoenix / Scottsdale Bed Bug Treatment & Inspection

How long can you go without a Bed Bug treatment and not know you have an infestation? Quite a while!

As pest pros here in the Phoenix and Scottsdale area we often find folks in serious need of a bed bug treatment who had just realized they might have a problem!  Bed bugs are super stealthy and can live in your home, feeding on your blood for months without being found out!H

ow is this possible? In this article I explain how Bed Bugs can go undetected so long, and I’ll give you some pointers on how to find them before your infestation gets out if control!

There’s three main reasons why bed bugs can go extended periods of time without being detected:

  • Their bite is very light and usually unnoticed.
  • Their bites leave little to no marks on many people.
  • They generally are only out and feeding while you are sleeping.

Let’s go through each item and then we’ll look at how we can detect them earlier. So that you can get your bed bug treatment done before your infestation gets really crazy!

Their bite is very light and usually unnoticed.

Many folks who find out they have a bed bug infestation are very surprised that they never felt a bite. I’ve had customers tell me things like “I’d know if I had bed bugs because I’d feel them biting me, right?” Wrong!

While a bed bug is biting you it injects it’s saliva into you which has a numbing agent in it. It will also contain a blood anticoagulant which helps the blood to flow freely out of you, further preventing irritation. In these ways most bed bug bites go completely undetected at the time of the bite. These dudes are stealthy!

Their bites leave little to no marks on many people.

“I would know if I had a bed bug problem because I would have marks where they bit me like other people I know have had. Right?” Nope.

Unfortunately, or fortunately, depending on how you look at it, bed bug bites leave no visible or felt evidence behind on many people, to tell us they’ve been there, ate there, and loved it. (They could at least get on Yelp and let us know what they thought of the service at that bedroom/restaurant!)

Believe it or not it, according to some studies it’s at least 30% of all people that have no reaction to bed bug bites! In the Elderly the number can be as high as three-fourths of folks not having any reaction. Also, how a person commonly reacts to mosquito bites has a direct correlation with if or how severely they will react to bed bug bites. Folks who normally have mild reactions to mosquito bites, usually have little or no reaction to bed bug bites, and vise versa.

They generally are only out and feeding while you are sleeping.

This is the biggest and most obvious reason so many bed bug treatments get delayed for so long. These dudes are stealthy! They hide in the folds, cracks and crevices of your mattress, box spring, and frame waiting to come out under cover of darkness, to feed on you. This can go on for months without any notice from you!

So what can I do to find them before they get out of control?

We recommend periodically checking your box springs, mattress and bed frame every couple of weeks. The life cycle of bed bugs is about 4 weeks to sexual maturity so spotting a few after two weeks would help the treatment be successful faster.

Bed bug treatments vary quite a bit in not only their content, from company to company, but also price. Getting an inspection and estimate is the best first step to take after you initially identify or suspect a bed bug infestation. At NaturZone Pest Control we not only have a method that is unique in it’s effectiveness, but also very unique in that usually require NO PREPARATION by our customers. Not only that, but we can usually give a FULL ONE-YEAR WARRANTY on our bed bug treatments! That is very uncommon in the industry and demonstrates how confident we are in our methods!

Are Your Neighbors Breeding Bugs?! Phoenix / Scottsdale Pest Control

In Phoenix and Scottsdale pest control experts have to take every factor into consideration when solving Bug problems. Sometimes the Neighbors are a part of the problem though.

Phoenix pest control and Scottsdale pest control companies are always asked about the likelihood that a neighbor is the cause of or a contributor to a pest problem like scorpions, spiders, ants, and cockroaches. Often the answer is no. But sometimes it’s glaringly obvious that something the neighbors are doing, or not doing is a big part of the problem.

When I’m asked about this possibility the answer often falls into one of three categories:

  • The neighbors are not part of the problem.
  • The neighbors are definitely contributing to the issue.
  • It is a widespread issue that everyone needs to address.

Let’s look at these three individually.

The neighbors are NOT part of the problem.

This is the definitely the most common answer that I give to this question. More often than not bug problems can be solved and treated on your property without sorting about what, if any, contributions have been made by the neighbors.

Usually treating your yard with a bait, and structures like the house and block fence, with a spray or other targeted treatment, will be enough to keep bugs out of your home.

So often I have had folks sure that the neighbors were the cause of the roaches or the scorpions only to realize a week or two after my initial service, that the issue has stopped with a treatment on their property. It’s really that simple most of the time and the homeland bad feelings are almost always unfounded.

The neighbors are definitely contributing to the issue.

When I walk into a yard, like the one in the video above, and see a well trimmed yard with a jungle growing on the other side of the fence, I know right away that there are factors at play in the neighbors yard.

Don’t get me wrong, folks may have a beautiful yard that is well kept, but if you have vines and thick shrubs growing up against the fence, that will provide immense structure for the bug de jure to live and thrive, free of pesticides, and in relative luxury. They just love the cool, moist little nooks and crevices all over inside that fence when it’s completely protected from Phoenix and Scottsdale pest control techs.

Of course, this is a huge problem when it comes to scorpions. Scorpions thrive inside block fences and the best way to control them is to treat those fence columns directly.

But please don’t have any ill will toward your neighbors in these situations. They are likely completely ignorant of the their part in the issue. After all, you’re the weirdo reading pest control blogs!

They often just need to be educated about the problem. Sometimes recommending a Phoenix pest control or Scottsdale pest control guy to them is all they need. It’s also a very good idea to both get treatment at the same time as this often can provide a huge it to the pest population so big that they may never recover.

It’s a widespread issue that everyone needs to address.

Sometimes a pest issue can affect an entire neighborhood so much that all or most of the properties need to be treated by a professional in order to get the problem under control.

A few years ago I went into a small neighborhood with small homes all built very close together. I had quite a few customers in there, and noticed that many of the homes that I was not treating had black widow webs around the foundation. After taking a look around the neighborhood it was clear that it was an issue for almost everyone.

I talked to some of the neighbors of my customers and they didn’t know why they kept coming back. I explained that if I was able to treat many of them all at the same time that the black widow population would become much more manageable and probably cease to be an issue. I ended up servicing quite a few homes there and have not seen black widows in that neighborhood since.

In all three of the situations above a thorough treatment, done right, can help control the issues for you!

Scorpions will be BAD this year! Phoenix / Scottsdale Scorpion Control

With the relatively warm winter and spring we just had, Phoenix and Scottsdale Scorpion Control is shaping up to be a wild ride this year!

In Phoenix and Scottsdale scorpion control is always serious business, but in years after a warm winter, and almost no spring to mention, scorpion activity can ramp up very quickly!

As a general rule I like to use new accounts as a way to gauge scorpion activity. During this last winter, I had new accounts from scorpion infestations every month of winter and into spring. This means that the scorpions didn’t even take their semi-customary winter break from terrorizing valley residents. And, more importantly, it means that they have had an almost uninterrupted, long breeding season.

Just today I did a first service for some folks who have been seeing a lot of baby scorpions. This means that the scorpion season has officially started, even though it never really ended this time.

What to Watch For

These. Watch For these.

A lot of folks ask me what to watch for in order to to determine when they should start a Phoenix and Scottsdale scorpion control program. We’ll get to when in a minute.

Scorpions, just like their family members in the wild, enjoy being in areas that are the least like the burning desert as they can find. This means they’re looking for shade, moisture, bugs to eat, and protection from predators (like exterminators). If you have areas around your home that offer shade for a lot if the day, retain moisture, and offer protection to scorpions and their table fare, you need to check these areas, or have a professional check them.

If you see crickets, and roaches and other bugs around your home, you essentially have a free buffet for scorpions. I don’t know about you, but if I had a free buffet in my area, I’d be there every day!

When is the Best Time to Start?

Folks that aren’t already on a regular pest control scheduled service often ask when the best time is to start Phoenix and Scottsdale scorpion control services. Well the answer is about two months ago. Yeah, I know. You don’t have a Delorian OR a flux capacitor so starting two months ago is not an option for you.

Well I have good news for you, the second best time to start is RIGHT NOW! It’s so cliche but it’s true. If you live in or near an area with scorpions you need to start your Phoenix and Scottsdale scorpion control program BEFORE you start seeing scorpions. Prevention is the key to living much more happily this summer.

Scorpion problems that are left to grow into the dog days of summer can take more time to get under control. The higher the numbers of scorpions get, the higher chance they have of getting inside your home!

It’s important to recognize that scorpions are one of the toughest pests to kill. So this means that we need to use absolutely everything in our toolbox that can help to control them. We recommend starting with a complete crack and crevice flush out as well as a foundation flush. We also recommend adding a full dusting the first time to really attack the scorpions where they live!

How Often Should I Have Service?

For a light scorpion infestation I recommend a Bi-monthly service. Having service every two months, after a very thorough initial service, can take care of most light to moderate infestations.

Heavy infestations should be treated every month in order to keep the scorpion population low and stay on top of the problem. Folks who live in more natural desert areas like up against a mountain or preserve usually need monthly service to keep things under control. When you live that close to their natural habitat, you have to stay diligent.

If you’ve got a problem with scorpions…or any pest…or you simply have a question…call NaturZone Pest Control at 602-476-1088 and ask for me, Jeffrey.  I’ll be happy to speak with you anytime.
