Bed Bugs – Bed Bug Treatment – Phoenix / Scottsdale Area Pest Control – NaturZone Pest Control

Here in the Phoenix / Scottsdale area Bed Bug control is is a never-ending task for pest control companies. At NaturZone Pest control we get daily calls from horrified people with Bed Bug issues.

One of the main concerns folks have is how much preparation will they need to do for their Bed Bug treatment and do we do A, B, or C treatments the way X, W, or Z company does?

In this article I will give you an overview of how we go about treating a Bedroom for Bed Bugs as well as an explanation of how and why we are able to do a thorough treatment, with an unmatched guarantee, with little to no preparation by the homeowner.

You’ll be able to take control of the situation and exile the little blood suckers from your home!

Our strategy based approach is broken down into these 5 steps:

 • Inspection
 • Localized heat treatment
 • Bed isolation and management
 • Treatment and encasement of your bed
 • Appropriate pesticide treatment of your room and home

Notice none of these steps are “Remove everything from your home and bake it in the sun for 12 hours.” or “Nuke the home with the most obnoxious chemicals known to man.” or some of the other crazy treatments out there.

The strategy based approach allows for ease of treatment as well as a much more conservative use of pesticides.

Here’s our owner and Bed Bug Master Bill Stewart giving you a quick look at the approach.

Lets explore each step a bit.

Inspection

The inspection is very important to any good pest treatment, especially an effective Bed Bug treatment. The inspection allows you to know where your heaviest areas of infestation are. It lets you target the areas that need the most treatment and attention.

What do we look for during an inspection? Of course we look for the critters themselves, but we also look for the tiny pearly white eggs as well as the stains from Bed Bug excrement. These stains are basically blood stains since the entire diet of the bed bug is human blood.

Localized Heat Treatment

Far from the expense and preparation required of whole house heat treatments, a localized heat treatment targets the areas where the Bed Bugs live, usually bed frames. Heat treating instantly kills not only the bed bugs themselves, but also their eggs. Localized heat treating is usually done with a handheld heat gun.

The heat gun is a very effective way of treating bed frames, even hard to reach spots.

Bed Isolation and Management

Here you isolate your bed from the rest of the room. Isolating the bed is one of the most important parts of getting control of your bed bug nightmare. The effect is twofold. It prevents the re-infestation of the bed and forces the bed bugs to wander the room looking for a meal, all the while getting the pesticides on them and killing them.

Your bed is isolated by pulling it away from the wall, placing the posts in “interceptors” that Bed Bugs can”t crawl over, and making sure that no linens are touching the floor. This effectively kills the bugs already on the bed and protects your from new ones, which prevents them from multiplying.

Treatment and Encasement of Your Bed

The box springs are usually the biggest target for treatment and encasement, though the mattress is usually treated and encased as well. The folds of fabric on the bottom of the box springs often have bedbugs, eggs and excrement in them. The box springs are treated with a special Bed Bug pesticide and then closed up inside a nylon encasement to kill the bed bugs already on them and to prevent re-infestation.

The mattress is also lightly treated and encased the same way. This prevents the bugs from continuing to make a meal of you and eliminates their potential for multiplying.

Appropriate Pesticide Treatment of Your Room and Home

After all these steps are done the final part of the treatment is to spray a pet and people friendly pesticide in the room and around other areas of the home which have been or could potentially be infested. This treatment is seals the deal.

When bed bugs are isolated from their food source, YOU, they don’t just sit still. They wander the house stupidly and aimlessly searching for food. This is actually a good thing since the more they move around, the more of the pesticide they get on themselves and the faster they die!

This is just a brief overview of an effective Bed Bug treatment and I will go into more depth in future posts.

Scorpion Control Scottsdale – Scorpions in the trees?

What can I do other than hire a pest control company to get rid of scorpions?

In this series I’ll give you several pointers on what you, the homeowner, can do, to keep scorpions out of and away from your home.

Scorpions in the Trees?!

Scorpions can play a huge part in scorpion issues in and around your home. After all, they aren’t called Bark scorpions because they go “WOOF”.

Scorpion Control Scottsdale AZ
Bark Scorpion

What types of trees do they like?

 • All kinds of Palm trees
 • Mesquites
 • Sycamores
 • Cottonwoods

These types of trees mimic the areas that scorpions like best in the wild.

Scorpion Expert Bill Stewart said; “Scorpions live in the desert and are very well adapted to the hot, dry conditions here. But they, like the rest of us, prefer cool moist areas, which is why, in the wild, they are attracted to riparian areas around washes. creeks and rivers. When we create these types of areas in our yards, we are inviting them onto our property.”

I’ve noticed over the years of treating for scorpions that they seem to really like the nooks of Palm bark. That’s why I pay close attention to those areas around palm trees when treating.

They also find Cottonwoods, Sycamores, and Mesquites in their favorite places in the wild. These are very common in our yards too. Trees touching or hanging over your home can provide a shortcut into your home, Especially through the exhaust fans in your bathrooms and laundry room.

It almost always causes a huge reduction in the amount of scorpions getting into a home when trees are trimmed away from the house!

Next time I’ll start to give you some of the tricks of the trade where it applies to scorpion control in and around your home!

Scorpion Control Scottsdale: Block Fences – NaturZone Pest Control

In Scottsdale, Az., scorpion control is a never-ending issue with pest control companies. Here at NaturZone Pest Control, we get calls daily from frantic homeowners who have found scorpions in or around their homes.

What can I do other than hire a pest control company to get rid of scorpions?

In this series I’ll give you several pointers on what you, the homeowner, can do, to keep scorpions out of and away from your home.

Block Fence Columns

If Scorpions were 1930’s gangsters then block fence columns would be the dark back allies and speakeasies of Chicago. Fence columns have everything the Al Capone of scorpions, the Arizona Bark Scorpion, could want in a seedy lair.

 • Fence columns are shaded and covered.
 • They are cool and can retain moisture.
 • They provide hiding spaces which are nearly impenetrable to humans.
 • They provide plenty of food resources in the form of other pests.

A good pest control tech knows this and we do our best to treat them with varying types of treatments. The problem is that many have obstacles.

Bushy plants should be kept far enough away from the fence, especially the columns, that ideally you can walk behind them, but at least far enough away that the cracks on each side of the columns can be treated.

Sheds or other structures usually pose a problem as well. Not only are they, many times, in the way of the fence columns, but then there’s a barrier to treating under or around the sheds themselves, another hot spot.

Vines on fences. Oh boy! Vines are beautiful, and they sometimes really make the yard, but they also make it near impossible to treat the fence, and they compound the problem by making the hiding spot more shaded, cooler, and even more protected.

If you want to see the scorpion gangsters going in and out of their speakeasy at night, like business is really booming, just go to a property with vines growing all over the fence line.

If you aren’t the one with the green thumb, but your neighbor is the one trying to single handedly replenish the world’s oxygen supply with their landscaping, then by all means, keep your side trimmed to a reasonable level, so as to facilitate the treatment of of the columns, while still having a little bit of pretty hanging over into your yard.

Scorpion expert Bill Stewart says: “Scorpions are naturally attracted to moisture so I like to recommend that folks keep their property as natural as possible but not try to make it a copy of their yard back in Minnesota or Washington state.”

Just keep this in mind, this is the desert, a rather inhospitable place, but if your yard is an oasis in that desert, everybody’s coming to visit. And that may include Capone and his thugs.

Next time we’re going to talk about trees and the role they play.

Scorpion Control Scottsdale – NaturZone Pest Control

In Scottsdale, Az., scorpion control is a never-ending issue with pest control companies. Here at NaturZone Pest Control, we get calls daily from frantic homeowners who have found scorpions in or around their homes.

What can I do other than hire a pest control company to get rid of scorpions?

In this series I plan to give you several pointers on what you, the homeowner, can do, keep scorpions out of and away from your home.

Landscaping

 • How and what your yard is landscaped with can have a huge impact on the scorpion population on your property. It also determines the effectiveness of your pest control treatment.
 • Some major scorpion hot spots in common landscaping can be:
 • Underneath creeping ground cover plants,
 • Underneath and behind plants that grow against structures like your home, shed or block fence
 • Inside block fence columns that are covered or shaded by plants, especially vines.

Also…plants against your house. This is a big one! When landscaping or re-landscaping your property try to put plants far enough away that when they are fully grown they’re at least a foot or two away from the foundation of your home or other structures. If you already have plants that are growing up against your home or other structures, try to trim them away from the house as far as possible so that treatment can be done behind the plant and specifically against the foundation.

The Foundation

The foundation of your home is one of the main treatment targets for scorpion control. If plants are growing up against it the problem is twofold.

First, you can’t treat that part of your foundation properly which creates a hole in your defenses against scorpions.

Second, it usually provides a cool moist hiding place for scorpions and other pests to spend the day, and it’s right next to your house!

Plants growing up against other structures are an issue too. They provide an hiding place for scorpions that may not be fully treatable. Also, most folks are hoping for at least some degree of control in their sheds and other structures.

Scorpion expert Bill Stewart says, “Creeping ground cover plants are one of the first things I look for when I get to a new customer’s home. The issue with them is that they’re usually pretty large, and that means a big chunk of your property could be harboring scorpions.

These plants usually have a lot of dead and decaying plant matter under them which holds moisture, making them inviting for all kinds of pests, and the dudes that like to eat those pests! I always recommend, if you really want these plants, to keep them a lot smaller than they are in most yards and to periodically lift them up and rake out the decaying debris.”

Next time I’ll cover block fences, the big bad boogey man of scorpion harborage areas!

Scorpion Control Scottsdale – Naturzone Pest Control

Scorpion control is a serious concern for many homeowners here in the Phoenix, Scottsdale and other areas around Maricopa County.  We at Naturzone Pest Control usually recommend that scorpion elimination is a combination of the thorough, creative pesticide treatments along with some environmental factors.

In this series I (Jeffrey West) plan to give you several pointers on what you can do, in addition to having Naturzone Pest Control perform regular service, so that you can feel safer in your home.

Part one: Eliminate Harborage Areas

Scorpions, like most other pests, like shaded, cool areas where they not only can get away from the sun and weather but also can hunt for their prey. Some of these areas include, but aren’t limited to: Wood piles, wood mulch, any debris pile, stacks of pavers or bricks, ground covering plants, cracks and crevices, and the worst culprit, block fence columns.

Lets start with wood. I like to tell folks that they don’t call them Bark Scorpions because they sound like a dog. These critters love to be in, under, on and around wood. Wood piles without a purpose should be removed completely when possible. Firewood piles should be elevated off of the ground at least a foot so that the area around or under can be treated. Firewood piles should also be as far away from the house as possible and at least a foot or two away from a block fence, shed or other structure.

Stacks of bricks or pavers have been one of the biggest hotspots for scorpions that I’ve found in my ten years in the industry. Use or remove them if possible. That is the most effect way of dealing with them. If that’s not doable then find a way to elevate the stack and store it away from structures so that the area around it can be treated.

Next time we’ll discuss ground cover and other landscaping issues as well as block fences.
